Google Chrome Mutes AutoPlay Videos Based on User Behavior

Thanks Google! Have you fallen victim of visiting a site and you’re in a meeting or at your desk and in a quiet environment when your computer starts talking? This has happened to most of us at Spigot, Inc! If you find this annoying, you will be happy to read from TechCrunch that Chrome and other browsers have muted this autoplay feature. The best news to Spigot, Inc is that it is based on user behavior, which we value above all.

There’s little that’s more annoying on the web than videos that start playing automatically and with their volume up. Over the course of the last few years, Chrome and other browser vendors have started to combat this, but for the most part, those solutions relied on the user explicitly taking action. Now, following the launch of a similar feature on mobile, Chrome on desktop is also getting much smarter about which sites it’ll allow to autoplay and which it’ll block — and it’ll learn from your behavior to personalize this feature.

Google says a “significant number of autoplays” are paused and muted, or have their tabs closed, within six seconds. I’m actually guessing most people close those tabs faster, but six seconds seems like a good enough measure to know whether a user wanted to hear the sound from a video or not.

Going forward, Google will learn from your own browsing behavior and learn which sites you’ll want to mute. For users who aren’t logged in — or who are new to Chrome — the browser will automatically mute about 1,000 sites by default based on that six-second measure it’s using to detect annoying sites.

WARNING: Tech Support Scams are at their Best

Microsoft released a warning about tech support scams. It seems that these scammers have become very convincing. Spigot, Inc shares the latest from Windows Defender.

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers use scare tactics to trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services that supposedly fix contrived device, platform, or software problems.

Scammers may call you directly on your phone and pretend to be representatives of a software company. They might even spoof the caller ID so that it displays a legitimate support phone number from a trusted company. They can then ask you to install applications that give them remote access to your device. Using remote access, these experienced scammers can misrepresent normal system output as signs of problems.

Scammers might also initiate contact by displaying fake error messages on websites you visit, displaying support numbers and enticing you to call. They can also put your browser on full screen and display pop-up messages that won’t go away, essentially locking your browser. These fake error messages aim to trick you into calling an indicated technical support hotline. Note that Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.

When you engage with the scammers, they can offer fake solutions for your “problems” and ask for payment in the form of a one-time fee or subscription to a purported support service.

Spigot, Inc Shares How Brands Can Protect themselves from Cyberattacks

Cyberattacks have become well known in today’s world. Spigot, Inc shares the latest on how brands can protect themselves. Read the full article from Adweek.

The price of falling victim to cybercrime is much costlier than simply losing data. Cyberattacks can permanently tarnish a company’s reputation. Take the Target breach, for example. Last year, Target agreed to an $18.5 million multistate settlement from a 2013 incident when hackers gained access to over 40 million customers’ credit card information, marking this as the largest data breach in history.

The effects of a cyberattack can be devastating, but many businesses operate under the assumption that they are immune to attack. Although most enterprises implement some form of cybersecurity protection, they remain vulnerable if it is not properly managed and maintained. With so much information being stored online, in the cloud and on mobile devices, it is time to make security everyone’s priority. Cybercriminals hide behind the elusive exterior of ads and apps. They use malware and ransomware to exploit their victim’s vulnerabilities and attack their networks.

Consumers do not Mind Ads on Mobile if they are Optimized Properly

Spigot, Inc learned that adults in the UK do not mind ads on mobile if they are properly optimized. Read the full story from Marketing Tech News.

Ads can be annoying, especially on mobile. But, according to research IAB UK the main source of annoyance for consumers using mobile is not the ads themselves, but the fact that a lot of them aren’t optimised for the format.

12,000 UK adults were asked about their feelings towards mobile advertising, and the vast majority of them are in favour of ads in order to keep online content free. 84% prefer ads to paying for an ad-free experience.

“A sustainable future is about making the experience work for everyone in the digital ecosystem, most importantly, people,” said Tim Elkington, Chief Digital Officer at IAB UK.

“Context is not a new concept, but we are still seeing a lot of ads not fit for purpose, and this report shows there are big benefits for brands that optimise for smartphones.”

The biggest factor that is likely to squander consumer goodwill towards ads is anything that makes whatever they are trying to do more difficult to do. Clunky, screen-filling ads that have people furiously jabbing at their screens are not likely to end in a conversion, unless by accident.

“When it comes to mobile, brands often use TV ads or desktop creative for a mobile environment and expect it to work. This is not the right approach and never will be,” said Ben Phillips, Global Head of Mobile, at MediaCom.

Ryan Stephens, President of Spigot Inc spoke to aspiring entrepreneurial students again at Florida Gulf Coast University. Spigot Inc Warns Best Buy Customers – Check to Make Sure You are Not a Victim of a Data Breach

Spigot Inc learned of a data breach from TechCrunch and we want you to be aware!

It’s been a week filled to the brim with customer security compromises, and here’s one more to add to the pile. A day after Sears, Kmart and Delta confirmed that they’d been impacted by a breach of data firm, [24]7.ai, Best Buy issued a public statement noting that it’s in the same boat.

At last count, Sears, Kmart and Delta believe that thousands of customers have potentially had data exposed. In its own statement, Best Buy seems slightly more optimistic about its own numbers, but from the sound of things, it’s still relatively early in the investigation.

“Since we were notified by [24]7.ai, we have been working to determine the extent to which Best Buy online customers’ information was affected,” the company said in the statement. “We have done that in collaboration with our third-party vendor and have notified law enforcement. As best we can tell, only a small fraction of our overall online customer population could have been caught up in this [24]7.ai incident, whether or not they used the chat function.”

Of course, a “small fraction” of the company’s overall online customer population still has the potential to be a fairly large number. According to [24]7.ai, the “cyber intrusion” occurred some time between September 27 and October 12, 2017, exposing customer payment information in the process.

The information was exposed by a piece of malware impacting [24]7.ai’s chat tool on October 12. The service says it issued an immediate fix and began an internal investigation into the source of the malicious code.

Firefox is Building a New Browser for Augmented and Virtual Reality

Although it is in the early stages, Spigot, Inc shares the news from Mozilla regarding development of their open source browser, Firefox Reality.

Mozilla has revealed that it is developing a web browser to work with standalone virtual and augmented reality headsets.

The open-source software company said its new browser, Firefox Reality, will use existing Firefox web technology combined with Servo, its experimental web engine.

Mozilla said that while other options for browsing the web already exist for standalone headsets, these are closed and platform-specific. It wants Firefox Reality to run on a variety of devices and platforms and because the new browser — like Firefox — will be open source, it will make it easier for manufacturers to add the browser to their platform, and provides an additional level of transparency for users.
