The Key to Flourishing in Work and Life

In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive world, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of work, often neglecting other essential aspects of life. However, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for our overall well-being and long-term success.

The Importance of Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance refers to the equilibrium between our professional commitments and personal life. It involves allocating time and energy to work, family, relationships, personal development, and hobbies. Here’s why achieving a healthy balance is so vital:

  1. Enhanced Physical and Mental Well-being: Neglecting personal life for work can lead to chronic stress, burnout, and various health issues. By creating space for relaxation, exercise, and quality time with loved ones, we can improve our overall physical and mental well-being.
  2. Increased Productivity and Creativity: Overworking can negatively impact productivity and creativity. Taking breaks and engaging in activities outside of work can refresh our minds, boost creativity, and enhance problem-solving skills. It allows us to return to work with renewed energy and fresh perspectives!
  3. Stronger Relationships: Relationships play a fundamental role in our happiness and fulfillment. When work dominates our lives, we may neglect our personal connections, leading to strained relationships. Prioritizing quality time with family and friends helps create a stronger bond and a support system that can help navigate challenging times.
  4. Personal Growth and Fulfillment: Work-life balance allows us to pursue personal interests, hobbies, and passions. Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment nurtures personal growth, self-esteem, and a sense of purpose beyond professional accomplishments.

Strategies for Achieving Work-Life Balance

While achieving work-life balance is a continuous process and may vary for each individual, here are some strategies to help strike that harmonious equilibrium:

  1. Set Priorities: Identify your priorities and align your time and energy accordingly. Clearly define your personal and professional goals to ensure you allocate time for what truly matters.
  2. Establish Boundaries: Set clear boundaries between work and personal life. Avoid bringing work-related stress home and limit distractions during quality personal time. Disconnect from work emails and notifications outside designated work hours.
  3. Delegate and Seek Support: Learn to delegate tasks and share responsibilities both at work and home. Seek support from colleagues, family members, or friends when needed. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  4. Time Management: Efficiently manage your time by organizing tasks, creating schedules, and setting realistic deadlines. Prioritize your workload, eliminate non-essential activities, and allocate time for self-care and relaxation.
  5. Practice Self-Care: Self-care is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Prioritize activities like exercise, meditation, hobbies, and quality sleep. Nurturing your physical and mental well-being is essential to thrive in all aspects of life.

In our pursuit of professional success, it’s easy to lose sight of the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. However, neglecting our personal lives can have detrimental effects on our overall well-being and happiness. By consciously prioritizing our personal lives, setting boundaries, and nurturing our physical and mental health, we can achieve a harmonious balance that enhances our productivity, relationships, and overall quality of life. Remember, a life well-lived is one that embraces both professional achievements and personal fulfillment.

New Year, New Me

Well, well, well. Would you look at that...its 2023 already! Queue the social media post about “New Year, New Me” but who are we fooling??

The new year is time for people to start fresh and change their habits of the past year. Some people say they are going to eat healthier, cut down on drinking, exercise more, call their families more...whatever it may be, time for change!! But the real question is, how long will these resolutions last? According to the NY Post, on average, New Year’s resolutions last until February 1st. Just a short 32 days. In a poll of 2,000 Americans, 68% admitted to giving up their resolutions even sooner than that! What's worse is that one in seven Americans do not even believe that they will follow through with their resolution in the first place.

The next question is why even make a New Year’s Resolution in the first place if you know you will not keep it? If every year we quit by February, why do we think it's going to be different this go around? As humans, we feel like we need to prove ourselves whether that be to ourselves or others. So, by making a resolution, you need to prove to others that you can keep it, but the downside is as soon as someone you told about it fails, you think it's okay to quit too because “you made it farther than them”. Or we will try to get our friends to do the same resolution so they can keep each other accountable... for a few weeks anyways. The average person according to NY Post said that they would pay $15,748 just to have someone hold them accountable for their resolutions- a lot of money for a quitter if you ask me.

Why can’t we keep up our resolutions? It only takes four things in a single day to go wrong for us to deem the day as a “bad day”. It’s almost like we wait for something to go wrong so we can say, “well today isn’t the day, I'll start tomorrow” … kind of why we wait until the new year to make ourselves better, huh? The top two reasons we can’t stick to our resolutions are a lack of discipline and a busy schedule. We make plans to change but we forget to plan how we will execute our new goal.

This is not to say don't make a New Year’s resolution. Just remember, if you are going to make a resolution, don’t just think about the end goal but plan on how you are going to get there. Life is a marathon, not a sprint... same goes for your New Year’s resolution.

WFH... Is It For Everyone?

Working from home has always been a thing but no one really hopped on board until Covid hit. According to wfhwins.com, it became a growing trend with a 173 percent increase to working from home. Now more and more companies plan to allow a full-time WFH situation and there are many reasons why.

First off, people work harder when they are working from home. They are not taking hour long lunches or coffee breaks to talk to people around the office. Not to say people are not taking breaks anymore, they are but they are shorter and more direct.

Working from home is also helping people with their work-life balance. People that work a normal 9–5 have difficulty maintaining a good work-life balance. When they work from home, they can have a flexible schedule and it allows them to get things done during the day instead of having to wait to do them when they get home. This allows people to spend more time to do what they enjoy once they get home and spend more time with their families.

One of the biggest pro’s of working from home is the decrease in stress. Many employees’ states that they feel more relaxed and can concentrate on the work they need to get done. Some people don’t enjoy the social aspect of going into the office and they rather sit at their desk and get their job done. While others love going around and talking to their coworkers to calibrate on projects.

BUT, working from home isn’t all positive. When Covid began and the move to working from home started, people were terrified. Companies were dropping employees like flies. This caused people to work in fear which led to exhaustion and many people got burned out.

People also felt as though they didn’t have a way out of their home life. Since everything shut down, that meant no schools in session and their spouse’s jobs could’ve been shut down too. Trying to handle a five-year-old and attend meetings is a very hard task. People were stressed and this took a toll on their mental health. Not to mention the fact that they couldn’t see anyone outside of their families, so it is hard to talk to someone about the struggles when all you have to talk to are the people causing the stress.

Working from home was something very few people did before the pandemic, but it has grown immensely. There are pros and cons to WFH, but majority of people and companies love it. It will be interesting to see if more and more companies start moving towards WFH and shutting down their offices completely or if we eventually will go back into office.

Morning Routine That Leads to Success

Ever think what is the trick to being successful? Is there something that every successful person is doing? If so, what is it and how do I start? Turns out, it all begins in the morning!

There is a reason people say “Early bird gets the worm.”. The first and arguably most important part of being successful is waking up early. Highly successful people are waking up at 4am to 5:30am. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, says that he likes waking up at 4am so he has extra, uninterrupted time to read customer reviews and hit the gym before the rest of the world is up and moving. Waking up early has been backed by science. Christopher Randler wrote an article about sleep quality and he states that people who wake up earlier are proven to be more proactive and deal with stress better. To implement this habit into your own life, start with waking up 15 minutes earlier than normal and gradually adjust until you reach your goal time.

Another great routine to add to your morning is working out. It doesn’t have to be a vigorous CrossFit class but a simple 30-minute yoga class or a couple laps in the pool to get your heart rate up. Barack Obama always starts his day with a 45-minute workout and says he is able to skip coffee now because his body is already awake and alert. Exercise helps you think more clearly, reduce stress, increase energy levels and, full circle effect, helps you sleep better at night. Let’s be honest, the best part about getting a workout in early in the morning is that it’s over with and you don’t have to think about it for the rest of the day.

Starting your morning on a high note is another task to add to your morning routine. This can be done in a few different ways such as meditation and setting goals. Meditation has become such an easy thing to do with all the resources we have right on our phones. They will tell you exactly what to do and most the apps are free. Jack Dorsey the CEO of Twitter highly recommends meditation and says that it has had a positive influence on his career. Setting goals in the morning can help you prepare for the day ahead of you. Brian Tracy, a motivational speaker, recommends picking one goal and completing it before breakfast. That way you are on top of your busy schedule, and you already feel accomplished before leaving the house!

Practice positivity to start each day. Today’s world is full of anger and hurt and it is easy to get wrapped up in it. If you start your day thinking about everything that is wrong, it can be hard to get out of the funk. Life coach, Tony Robbins, says “If you want to make a change or improve something, the first place you want to prove it is in your mental, emotional state. The thoughts are weak when you’re in a weak place. The actions are weak.”. So, to counteract the weak thoughts and state of mind is to begin by writing down daily affirmations, positive thoughts and what you are grateful for. People who include this practice in their morning routine experience inspiration, happiness and tend to be more successful at work.

Although your morning is a small part of your day there is no reason to rush it. The most successful people are getting up at 4am, working out, meditating, and writing in a gratitude journal. Obviously, it would be difficult to add all these parts into your normal morning routine by tomorrow but over time it is possible. If you put time into yourself, it will pay off in every aspect of your life, not just your career.
